Writing Meta Descriptions That Actually Convert Clicks
The 160-character pitch that decides whether your search ranking turns into traffic — or doesn't.
What a meta description is for
Your meta description is the pitch under your title in search results. It doesn't affect rankings directly, but it absolutely affects click-through rate — and clicks signal Google that your result is the right one.
The structure that works
Open with the benefit. Add a credibility marker. End with a verb that invites action. 160 characters total. That's it.
Example: 'Generate strong passwords in two seconds. Used by 200,000+ developers. Try it free →'
Include the keyword (but don't stuff it)
Google bolds matching terms in the snippet, which draws the eye. Use the keyword once, naturally. Stuffing makes you look spammy and lowers CTR.
Test, measure, iterate
Search Console shows impressions and CTR for every page. If your CTR is below 2% for a page that ranks in the top 5, your description is the problem. Rewrite and ship.
